Bees

This is our first year keeping honey bees. After attending a beekeeping course (almost a must for the beginner), we started off with a small nucleus of bees in July 2009 but they had a very bad start because of the wet summer. They seem to be surviving so far in this exceptionally cold winter - what a year to start on your first colony!
If all goes to plan this year, we should have a swarm or two to expand our apiary and plenty of jars of honey. Hopefully in 2011 we will be able to supply bees to any would-be beekeepers.
Latest News, March 2010 : Like so many other beekeepers, we lost our hive. They just weren't strong enough to survive the conditions, despite feeding them throughout the winter. (One long-term beekeeper who had 90 hives is down to 12 so we don't feel so bad at losing ours.)
