Rare & Native Breed Tamworth Pigs

We've been keeping registered pedigree Tamworths since 2009. Just like our chickens, the pigs are outdoor-reared and fed on a GM-free diet, prevented from escaping (well most of the time) by electric fencing. We have two sows: Mandy and Tessa. Mandy is from the Melody strain and Tessa is a Golden Rose.

Latest News, August 2011
Tessa had her first litter without any hiccoughs - 11 piglets, which is an amazing number for her first litter. The piglets' dad was Eric, a pedigree registered Tamworth from the Golden Ball strain who we bred from Mandy's first litter. They will be ready as weaners in October.

Also, way back in May, Mandy had a litter of 11.

August 2010
Mandy has turned out to be an excellent mother! We'd been told to expect five or six piglets because it was her first litter: she has nine healthy piglets.

Latest News, May 2010
We sent our registered pedigree gilt 'Mandy' off to see her boyfriend last month and she's now back with all the signs of being in-pig. If all goes well we should have some piglets in early August and there may be a few extra weaners for sale.  We'll keep you informed of progress via this site.

About the Tamworth Breed
A hardy traditional old breed, being the closest relative to the wild boar. It is an excellent bacon and pork pig. Apparently, if you read all the books, they are not for the novice but we've found them endearing. They are renowned for being mischievous, talkative escape-artists that just love to root, making them good at reclamation work.

The breed has moved down the RBST Watchlist from 2 (endangered) to 3 (Vulnerable) which is very good news for the breed. We find that the meat from the Tamworth tastes exceptional and is well acclaimed in one of our local restaurants.
